Vsevolod Pudovkin (1893-1953)

I found the way to build up a dialogue in which the transition of the actor from one emotional state to another... had never taken place in actuality before the camera. I shot the actor at different times, glum and then smiling, and only on my editing table did these two separate moods co-ordinate with the third -- the man who made the joke.
