French writer who wrote 92 novels. In his The Lawyer in Literature, John Marshall Gest compares Balzac's French language art with Dickens for humour, Thackeray for satire, Meredeth for analysis, Poe for imagination, Swift for cynicism, Defoe for narrative, and with Sir Walter Scott who was Balzac's model.
