Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778)
Summary
A leading English Baroque composer of theatre, operatic, instrumental and vocal music. In 1740 he wrote the patriotic "Rule, Britannia," for the dramatic work Alfred. He also wrote the comic opera Thomas and Sally or The Sailor's Return followed in 1760 by Arne's revival of Gay's The Beggar's Opera.
