Biographical
French artist who abandoned engineering and later studied art under Carriere. His work was influenced by African art. Derain is known for his Fauvist period and the influences of Vlaminck and Matisse. Later he was influenced by Cezanne. Derain later designed woodcut book illustrations and set decorations for Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
