Donato Creti (1671-1749)

Sierra Club

Summary

Italian Baroque artist known for his renderings of astronomical objects. His Baroque era paintings include all of the then known solar system bodies (Neptune, Uranus and Pluto were undiscovered): sun, moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury.

Each individual astronomical image is illustrated as part of dimly illuminated treed landscapes incorporating one or several passive observers. The planetary images (below) are eerily magnified and set in partly clouded skies.
