Gian Jacopo Caraglio (1500-1565)
Summary
Italian engraver, goldsmith and medallist, active also in Poland. Caraglio is known for his erotic engravings.
His Mars and Venus Surrounded by Nymphs and Putti (above) at the University of Michigan Museum of Art incorporates images of a nude, putti, nymph, Mars, Venus, bow, arrow, scale, and helmet.
His surviving works include two signed intaglios (Paris, Bib. N.; New York, Met.), two medals (Padua, Mus. Civ.; Venice, Correr) and a cameo (Munich, Staatl. Munzsamml.).
