Giovanna Garzoni (1600-1670)
Summary
Remembered most for her watercolor studies of plants and animals, but she also produced portraits and religious pictures. She never married, but travelled around and worked for the most powerful patrons in Italy--a very unusual thing for a woman to do in this century. She was a member of the Academy of Saint Luke for several decades. [Adapted from The Italian Art Tradition and Women]
