Nicolas Gombert (c. 1490-1556)
Summary
Nicolas Gombert was a Flemish (Netherlandish) composer born near Lille, now a part of France. He was in service as choir master to the (Holy roman) Emperor Charles V, with whom he travelled widely; he is thought to have been a pupil of Josquin des Prez . Wrote more than 200 chansons, also Masses, motets, etc., and is the last of the great technically advanced masters of vocal polyphony. As opposed to his Italian contemporaries, who had begun work on a more animated and harmonically-oriented idiom, Gombert kept entirely within the domain of strict counterpoint, and in fact seemed to hold the new musical developments of the time in low regard. His style continued to represent the most advanced development of imitative counterpoint, at least until the elaboration of the fugue in the Baroque era.
