Biographical
19th century English novelist; 20th century poet. Exceptionally good writer. Married twice. Originally trained as an architect. Gave up novel writing after Jude the Obscure, criticized for its apparent anti-marriage stance. Other novels include Tess of the D'Urbervilles (filmed, by Roman Polanksi, as Tess), The Mayor of Casterbridge, Return of the Native, A Pair of Blue Eyes, The Dynasts, and Far From the Madding Crowd. Influenced Philip Larkin, others; as a result, his literary reputation is steadily increasing.
