Stephen Sondheim (1930-)

Musicals are plays, but the last collaborator is your audience, so you've got to wait 'til the last collaborator comes in before you can complete the collaboration.

Stephen Sondheim is definitely one of the revolutionaries of this past century in musical theatre. Many of the modern composers simply go for volume, fluff, or shock value. Sondheim creates layers in every aspect of his shows - from book to lyrics to music.
