Archibald Barnes (1887-1971)

Sierra Club

Summary

Canadian Painter b. 1871, d. 1971. Archibald Barnes settled in Toronto in 1930 where he became a successful portrait painter. The Grey Veil shown here, was described in Saturday Night by Jean Grayham: "The austerity and grace of the subject are brought out in soft and neutral tints. It is unusual in style and severity and suggests the art of Spain. Such work is the revelation of the poetry which lies in such subtle art and is especially needed in this generation of broad effects and crude colouring."
