Those were the days in this country where H. G. Wells, Bernard Shaw and Conan Doyle could have influence, and that's gone, that's true. But I don't think we have less influence in the hearts and minds of readers. I think, if anything, we have just as much, if not more.

Biographical
English writer. Graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, in modern languages. Worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary. Barnes worked as a reviewer and literary editor for the New Statesmen and the New Review. Julian Barnes has written nine novels. His writing has focussed on themes of history, reality, truth and love.
