Francois Couperin (1668-1733)

Sierra Club

Summary

Known as "le grand" to distinguish him from an uncle of the same name. Couperin was the most distinguished of a family of French musicians. He enjoyed royal patronage under Louis XIV and composed church music for the royal chapel. Couperin's chamber music includes L'apotheose de Lully (The Apotheosis of Lully), a tribute to the leading composer in France in the second half of the 17th century. Couperin's compositions for the harpsichord occupy a very important position in French music. [Adapted from HNH International]
